Rajant’s BreadCrumb system is deployed in numerous large networks of 150-250 units. The result is a comprehensive, stable, meshed mobile broadband network capable of operating in a vast open-pit active mining space.
Multi-radio, wireless transmitter-receivers for mines
Rajant’s LX, LX4 and LX5 model BreadCrumbs are rugged, multi-radio, wireless transmitter-receivers that form a mesh network (using InstaMesh®) when used in conjunction with other BreadCrumbs. Each BreadCrumb is a portable, wireless mesh network node containing between two and four radios, and supports open-standard IEEE 802.11a/b/g protocols to enable data, voice and video applications.
This full-featured device can operate in extreme conditions and has several mounting options. The available radio configuration frequencies are 2.4GHz, 5GHz, 4.9GHz and 900MHz.

The Rajant BreadCrumb ME4 is a rugged, wireless device that forms a mesh network when used in conjunction with other BreadCrumb systems.
This portable, wireless mesh network node contains two transceivers and up to four external antenna ports, and is an ideal alternative for adding wireless infrastructure and mobile nodes into your existing network.
High-reliability wireless mesh communication network
The InstaMesh protocol is one of Rajant’s major differentiators: it avoids any compromise between overall data throughput and the ability to instantly respond to changes in the wireless mesh. Change is the enemy of multi-hop data networking and even without mobility, wireless is a magnet for change. Until InstaMesh, the result has always been poor reliability or low data throughput.
InstaMesh takes a no-compromises approach to wireless mesh networking by enabling full network mobility, high data throughput, robust configurability, high scalability, built-in redundancy and reliability, adherence to IEEE standards, and certified security.
Multiple-radio mesh network for mines
RAPTR is a Rajant term for when two or more BreadCrumbs are connected via their internal Ethernet port to act as one unit and used to extend or strengthen the network. A typical RAPTR configuration is three BreadCrumbs with 120° directional antennas that provide 360° cover for long distances such as a cell tower.

Administration packages for mesh communication networks in mines
BC Commander and BC Commander Enterprise are the administration packages enabling the BreadCrumb wireless network. BC Commander (Enterprise) allows the network administrator to perform all administrative tasks over the wireless network without the need to be ‘hard wired’ to the physical radio device.
Remote administration and diagnostics for mesh communication networks in mines
Rajant incorporates a diagnostic computer in the network. The Rajant remote administration and diagnostics station (RRADS) is a powerful dual-core computer, with three (900MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz) radios installed, which monitors the different applications on the network. RRADS contains several software tools that can sniff around the network looking for applications that slow down data transfers by creating packet storms.
An authorized user can remotely access the BreadCrumb network from another location through a VPN connection as if they are on-site. Users can check on the health of the system or machine status from hundreds of miles away and diagnose a faulty component before getting to the site.
Automatic protocol tunnel (APT) for mine mesh networks
APT is a unique InstaMesh feature that extends the wireless mesh domain beyond the wireless segment. An additional benefit is that it allows multiple bridged-entry points between the wireless BreadCrumb domain and a given Ethernet segment without creating packet loops. The result is that bottlenecks and single-point-of-failures can be eliminated while improving overall network performance.
Support for VLAN and QOS IEEE 802.11 standards allows incoming traffic can be filtered or prioritized. In addition, the InstaMesh routing protocol will use a wired APT connection as it would any wireless connection between BreadCrumb peers. If the wired route is faster and has capacity, it will simply be seen as part of the overall mesh, allowing the mesh network to take advantage of high-speed wired or optical connections.
